HEROES EACH ONE

Without pretense or glory, I would like to share my sermon from this morning’s mass.

.

No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)

.

Yet today, we remember countless who laid down their lives for strangers.  Because of their call to duty and honor.

.

My father in law was fond of saying “there are no atheists in those foxholes.  He bravely served in World War Two.

.

I’ve heard it said as well that there were no atheists on 9/11 here in New York.  We live in a time where video proves it.

.

I have watched more people than I care to count that unselfishly headed to this e towers when everyone else was running away!  I lost friends that day and friends as a result of that day.  I have seen the strongest, bravest men and women from that scene break down, take a deep breath, let out a sob, then carry on!  Never quitting.  They dug through the pile, they honored their brethren at countless funerals, they took care of and consoled the loved ones left behind, all while they are still battling their own thoughts & health issues from that day!

.

Each Wednesday, I have the honor of sharing a holy hour with one such man, a firefighter who, despite health issues that require monthly check-ups, refuses to think he should not have been there, not run into the flames and into the chaos.  Believing in the power of prayer for himself, his family, his friends and all those in uniform.  He has a stack of prayer cards to make my Irish mother in law jealous.  Yet this is how he believes he still can help out.

.

I found this picture while scanning my various news feeds and it truly hit home.  I would like to share it with you now.

I just want you all to know that I for one will NEVER FORGET what they did, did for complete strangers.  Though none of these firefighters or police would ever admit it, but they are the TRUE HEROES!!  People to be looked upon as role models. These are who the youth of today should look up to.

Our jobs, 17 years later, is to honor their memory and their selfless, heroic actions as they lived the gospel by the lives.

.

Today the gospel tells us that Jesus picked the 12 apostles, the men who will be tasked to carry on his message.  17 years ago today, God chose 3000 to further show us the path to righteousness, the path to HIM!

GOD BLESS EVERY ONE OF US!

Deacon John
